Helloooo........  Long Time; "no see".  Yes...it's been ages since I sent out a newsletter.  Some of you even thought that you "fell off" the mailing list.  Excuse me for the long absence...and I will not bore you with the l-o-n-g explanation.  Just BRIEFLY:  Life is consumed with caring for my elderly, handicapped, chronically ill father.  I think that just about says it all.

HOWEVER, there this newsletter is "high priority" because it is regarding email scams, fraud, and identity theft and your financial safety.

Dirty Tricks Will Cost You Money

There are two major types of attacks going on right now (and have been since before the first of the year.)  They involve user accounts with "sister" companies eBay and PayPal.  PayPal and eBay are not at fault, but being HUGE online  sites they are a great "target", for this scheme.  Here's how it works:

eBay

An email arrives that gives the appearance of being from eBay.  It will look like, or be titled "Question From eBay Member"; "Question About Item #xxxxx", or some other "legitimate" appearing subject.  The contents may say something about them wondering if an item was still available, or even threatening that they paid for your auction item and didn't receive it and they are going to report you to eBay.  This will ALWAYS include a hyperlink in the body of the email for you to respond.  (By the way, this ALL LOOKS REALLY GOOD, until you use your more advanced computer skills to detect the REAL direction of the hyperlink.)  IF you click on the link in that email it will take you to an imitation web site and request all kinds on information...like your user name, password, and maybe even ask for your banking information.  Do Not Do It.

PayPal

There are two types of variants with PayPal.  One tells you that your account has been "Frozen", will have "limited" or "restricted access" unless you click the link below and "update" or "re-activate" the information they are requesting.  Notice again, this involves a hyperlink in the email that the schemers are really hoping you'll use.  This looks like a very real email, and even the linked site looks "authentic" -- it's not.  The other type email will be to "notify" you that an additional email address has been added to your PayPal account and that you should click the link below to "confirm" the addition.

These fakes are so good that they even include what looks like the PayPal and eBay information on how to guard against scams, or include a hyperlink to a page that simulates the respective fraud-protection pages.

In all cases DO NOT use a hyperlink in an email.  (In fact, many of these fraud emails will, by use of a randomizer not even arrive to the email address you are registered at.--I have two accounts, one business and on personal but I receive these at all of my email addresses that I monitor--some 20-or-so accounts.)

Their primary goal is to CONVINCE YOU that you should click on the link in the email.
If they achieve that, they are close to getting everything they need to rob you blind.

Best Procedure

Don't use that email to check the validity of a "notice."  You should use your internet browser (Internet Explorer, Netscape, AOL, FireFox, etc. to visit the eBay or PayPal website.  Enter the site in the NORMAL, DIRECT way at paypal(dot).com or ebay(dot).com.  [NOTE: the word "dot" has been added in parenthesis to the proper web site address, as some SPAM filters will block the direct mention of the entire URL.] Log into your account in the normal manner with your user ID and password.  eBay's member log in screen will have any legitimate "alerts" right there; if PayPal says there is a second "new" name in your email settings, check it from the logged in "profile" tab, you'll be able to see how many email addresses are listed and which is considered "primary" if there is more than one.

Every time I've checked one of these, I've verified that nothing, in fact was amiss with my account, and yes indeed, the email was a fraud.

eBay has a very good tutorial on protecting yourself against fraud by "faked" (a.k.a. "spoofed") eBay simulating email; good reading for ANYONE that does transactions online.  You may also forward suspicious email to: spoof@ebay.com.

Be suspicious, don't be a victim.
