YET ANOTHER VIRUS  Ye Olde "Drone & Groan"

Here we go again!  You've no doubt heard the latest email menace is MyDoom, (aka Novarg).  It's estimated that one in every 12 emails is infected.  You've heard me drone about keeping your anti-virus programs updated (frequently!) and setting it to "real time", and other safe email and surfing practices.  It's not joy for me to be so repetitive about virus protection, but if I don't drone, you might groan, when you develop virus related problems.

Being PRO-ACTIVE is essential to keeping a "clean machine" and much more time and cost effective then being REACTIVE after you've been infected.

(NOTE:  There is ALREADY a variant of MyDoom--B--So if you did your anti-virus update just "the other day"--do your update again!)

Of course, do your anti-virus updates, of course do your MicroSoft critical (i.e. security) updates.  When you visit the main page of the Henry County Web, have a glance at the Trend Micro Box for Top Viruses and Advisories paying attention to "yellow alerts" and higher.

And just to be sure, at least once-in-awhile use an online virus scan such as provide by Trend Micro (House Calls) or McAfee or Symantec.  An online scan is an insurance method in case your machines anti-virus has been compromised/corrupted....HOWEVER...there is an extra advisory we'd like to share, exposed by my friend and colleague Beverly Howell.  An internet search for "free online scans", will produce a list of various links.  Stick with the well known and trusted Anti-Virus companies.  Beware, one particular "free" online virus scan carried and unwanted bonus--SPYWARE.

ALSO...

New, from the Department of Homeland Security, you can sign-up for email bulletins Cyber Alerts and Cyber Tips.  These are available in TECHNICAL and NON-TECHNICAL versions, so my fellow geeks can get the down and dirty and my less geekish friends can get the "short story" instead of the novel.

Sign-up at:  http://www.us-cert.gov/
MicroSoft is also providing information about MyDoom at:  http://www.microsoft.com/security/antivirus/mydoom.asp
And a THREE STEP, PROTECT YOUR PC instructional at:  http://www.microsoft.com/security/protect/default.asp

SOMETHING "PHISHY"

"Phishing" is a tactic to lure you into revealing private, sensitive imformation such as credit card numbers and PIN, passwords, driver's license number, etc.  There is a new "malware" pretending to be from MicroSoft claiming that your user license has expired and you need to provide credit card info and PIN number.  (This probably is intended to exploit XP operating system users, since that version does have an "activation" notice.  The TRUE XP activation notice DOES NOT request credit card info!)  "Phishing," itself is not new, but this particular scheme is...

SEEKING STUCKERS

JD STUCKER emailed my a short time ago and asked if I could "get the word out" about his family search.

"I am a geneaologist and have a website set up for the Stucker Family. I am trying to find all cousins of our family. I would appreciate if you could put information online that we wish to know the whereabouts and all the information of this family. All cousins are invited to our website. It is by email only. jstucker@insightbb.com

"Our family came to the United States about the time of Daniel Boone and settled at Bryan's Station near Fayette County, KY. ...I do love the History of Our Ancestors and have made trips to where they have lived and died."

FILM RESCUE INTERNATIONAL

Ooops!  Have you ever come across an OLD! roll of film that you forgot to have processed?  Have you come across an old movie camera and discovered there's a roll of unprocessed film still in the bag?  Don't despair! and Don't throw it away!  There is HOPE!

When my sister was cleaning and exploring after our mother's passing, she discovered some old movie film that my father forgot to have processed--it was from around the mid 1960's!  Those images might have held precious images of family passed (past) and it was a shame that they would be lost forever.  I wrote to Kodak to see if there was any possible way to RESCUE this film.  Alas, Kodak no longer supports the film type.  But without "recommending" this particular company they let me know of their existance.

Film Rescue International specializes in specializes in processing old film, still and motion picture.  While John and I may be competent to handle still Black & White film there was no way we could attempt color 8mm motion picture film, and I thought it would be prohibitively expensive to try and have it processes by some "specialty house".  To my amazement, the cost to attempt this was not so outrageous considering the nature or the process.

Film Rescue will be plain honest with you...there are no guarantees.  Success is dependent on may varibles, which they explain.   Considering the probability that this undeveloped film held images of our mother and grandparents, it was certainly worth a "gamble"--to be sure, it IS a bit of a gamble, but one worth the fee.  IF Film Rescue is able to recover any images they transfer the film to video and you are sent a VHS tape.  Unfortunately, our film was not one that was successful, and so, Film Rescue refunded a portion of their fee.

So...as you "Spring Clean" or go on a treasure hunt in the closets, attic, etc., and you come across unprocessed film, don't be hasty.   For information, check out:  Film Rescue International at http://www.filmrescue.com.

"MAGIC" PAPER

I'd heard about Parchement Paper a long time ago from watch TV cooking shows.  I was interested, but for a long time I couldn't find it in the local stores.  Finally, I did find that area stores were carrying one or two different brands.  I bought a roll and there it sat in the pantry for a long time.   Well, this past Christmas I decided it was time to break open the box and start trying it out with cookie baking.  WOW!  Parchment paper yeilded such great reuslts and saved me so much time--no long cooling down the cookie sheets, cleaning, re-greasing!  All I had to do is cool down the pans an lay down a new sheet of paper.   I'll never do cookies again without parchment paper!

But wait!  It worked so well with cookies, what else could I do with parchment paper?  Ah Ha!  Frozen bread fish fillets came out crispy!  And that's not all!  I'm still trying the parchment paper with other foods and loving it.  Unlike foil, you can even use parchment paper in the microwave!

By the way...this is NOT the kind of parchment paper used for fancy writing.  This is baking/cooking parchment paper!

I have used parchment by PaperMaid and Reynolds, they both perform well, but the Reynolds appears to be more readily available at our local stores.   Here are a few websites for recipes, instructions and ideas with parchment paper:

That should get you started...Bon Appetit!

SMART IDEAS

Recycling 7 Days a Week

As part of the County's new contract with Rumpke a recycling dumpster is provided.  The container is located at the County Road facility at 714 Property road on the outskirts of New Castle and is open 7 days a week.  Most of the materials we have grown accustomed to recycling with the monthly pickup stations (which will still continue, by-the-way) can be taken to the County Road barn and placed in the dumpster.  One notable exception is NO GLASS.  There is a notice on the contain about exemptions.  I just took my plastic jugs and aluminum cans there yesterday, and it looked like I might have been one of the first to take advantage of the benefit.  If you can't get to the collection stations (Campbellsburg, New Castle, Eminence, Pleasureville) on the designated Saturdays, now you have an alternative.

For more information see the our new page regarding Rumpke and our previous page about recycling.

Recycling Update

Please note that RECYCLING DATES have CHANGED. Recycling is now every-other month.
