Something About Labor Day
I wonder sometimes, if our kids know, what Labor Day is all about. I perceive that many of our youth just know Labor Day is the last holiday of the summer season, and a day off from school. Sometimes I wonder if my "contemporaries" think of it beyond that. Not that there's anything wrong with that...often enough, that's the most meaningful thing in our lives--a holiday gathering, a day off from work or school. I, too, appreciate the day, and I do take at least a moment to think of it's other significance, even on a personal level.
A hundred years ago, there was no Labor Day. In fact, for most people there were very few days off from work. Labor laws were practically non-existant...maybe a few "advanced" communities had child labor laws, but not many. Working men, women, and even children could expect to work 12-18 hours a day or more; quite a few worked from sunrise till sunset, under poor conditions--even dangerous conditions. The "boss man" probably didn't have much of a "social conscience." Long hours, small pay--we still struggle with that today and hardly realize how much better we have it than our grandparents and great-grandparents.
I know what the AFL-CIO is--American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations. It's about Unions. Union is a "dirty word" to a lot of people--and I understand that. I also can appreciate how and why they came about and why they were--and may still be--necessary. I can also see a "way" and a "why" they shouldn't have been necessary in the first place.
For thought; a business man once imparted this wisdom to my husband years ago: "If you only pay your help $3.25/hr, but in order to live they need to $5.00/hr, they are going to make up that $1.75 somehow." He was specifically addressing the fair treatment of his labor and keeping them "honest and loyal." Really, that observation extends beyond salary--it was just as much about respect, good leadership, social consciousness and compassion. And..it was smart. He was on to something...and if other, earlier businessmen had this attitude we might have never seen the organization of unions.
In history, there have been a few prominent businessmen (companies) that practice good relations with their employees (Hershey's is one that comes to mind.) But the majority had an attitude that was more to the tune that labor was nearly ownership--people were a "commodity" to be exploited.
I just might be sounding like a "flaming liberal" about now, but I'm not really, though I can't confidently call myself strictly conservative either. And it was also not my intent to do a history "lecture." This rumbles around in my mind because I am thinking about my Grandfather.
My Grandparents came to America in the 1920's; like other immigrants they were seeking a better life. And it was better--they loved the opportunities in America and they worked hard. Without a lengthy family history...my grandfather helped to organize a union and that was no small task. Being an organizer was a very risky, dangerous business--it could get violent, it could be "fatal." I can picture my Grandfather being a gutsy leader, though that all happened long before I was born.
He was the President of the Bakers Local 365, and Shop Steward for 28 years. To this little child, he was just a loving Grandpa. With maturity, I have learned more of the depth and breadth of Grandpa--he was courageous to do what he did, he was no "whimp." And I just have to be proud of him.
So this Labor Day...cheers to you Grandpa! Here's to the Union Workers. Here's respect to those that stood up for all of us, while building our nation and a strong industrial economy. Some compassion is due, too, for the children that didn't get a "full" education because they worked along side the men and the women; some of them that lost their lives in incidents like the "Shirt-Waist Fire."
Have a great Labor Day, and be thankful.
NEW STUFF
Changes to The Henry County Web
The changes I have been planning for the website have been delayed. The Internet virus epidemic has had a lot of people scrambling to protect their equipment and those of us that use the Internet for business have really had our hands full. I have also been assisting clients, friends, and family with updates, port blocking, and unfortunately for some--information recovery. That takes time, and a lot of it. I just wanted to let you know that it's going to take a little longer than planned to get the new stuff launched.
